Another successful weekend of racing concluded at Mosport Karting Centre (MKC) this afternoon for Event 2 of the 2021 Motomaster Ron Fellows Karting Championship (MRFKC). Over the two-day event there were 150 karts registered in nine classes. There was great depth in every class, with the biggest classes being in Briggs & Stratton Senior and ROK Senior, both having 28 entries each.

Weather was humid all weekend with rain showers coming on Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning started off foggy, but cleared up later on and stayed dry through to the end of the event.

Woods-Toth Winning Streak Broken On Sunday

Patrick Woods-Toth’s 2021 season race-winning streak came to and end on Sunday. Compared to his dominant performance at Hamilton’s opening MRFKC event, Woods-Toth had to battle all weekend for his results. The Prime Powerteam driver failed to qualify on the front row for both races, but fought his way to the lead on Saturday and put in an excellent drive to win the race.

But on Sunday Woods-Toth qualified in third place, and finished second in the Pre-Final behind Racing Edge Motorsports driver Ryan Macdermid. At the start of the Final it was Macdermid and Adam Ali who got away off the line. Ali then slipped past teammate Macdermid while Woods-Toth chased them both in the third spot. Macdermid and Woods-Toth then battled for several laps while Ali managed to build a near-two-second gap. At the checkers it was Ali with the win over Woods-Toth and Macdermid to round out the podium.

Miller, Prior Victorious On Hectic Briggs Senior Mosport Weekend

Prior, Treadwell, Ploder, Barnes, Ali … these are just some the names that topped the charts in Event 1 at Hamilton. But there were new names added to the championship hunt this weekend at MKC. Professional Racing Ontario’s (PRO) Avery Miller walked away with the win on Saturday, as well as the Pfaff Senior High Performer Award. Second was Adam Ali, a familiar name to the Briggs Senior podium of course. Lily Flintoff, also from PRO, made a daring last lap move on Prior to round out the podium in Race 3.

On Sunday there was a sense of urgency from the Event 1 championship contenders Prior, Barnes, and Treadwell; finishing first, second, and third in the Pre-Final and making a statement to the rest of the pack that the Saturday script wouldn’t be repeated. In the Final it was Prior and Barnes who got away in a two-kart draft early, and they never were challenged by third place. It was that battle for the final podium position which provided the most action as a train of around five karts battled it out for most of the race. At the head of the train was Treadwell, Maddox Heacock, and Steven Navratil. Treadwell was then shuffled to the back of the pack with Heacock and Navratil left to battle it out. Multiple karts then came together on the final lap and Navratil was caught in the carnage, leaving Heacock unchallenged to round out the podium.

Great Briggs & Stratton Cadet Field At Mosport Provides Action

One of the surprise and delights of the weekend was the large and competitive Briggs & Stratton Cadet class, with 16 karts registered Saturday and 19 on Sunday. Jackson Pearsall came out the winner on Saturday, and was awarded the $350 Pfaff Junior High Performer on that day. Alexis Baillargeon finished second, with Keaton Pipe rounding out the podium.

On Sunday it was Keaton Pipe who battled back from a fifth place qualifying position by working up to third in the Pre-Final, then getting to the front and taking the win in the Final. For a great preparation and team effort, Pipe was awarded the $500 Champion Fine Tuned Award.

Other Storylines & Special Awards

The $500 Chevrolet Team Spirit Award on Sunday was awarded to Christian Menezes who, after tangling with a competitor in the pre-final, aided that competitor with a push-start; sacrificing his own race and showing great sportsmanship. These displays are what this award is all about! Saturday’s winner was Ethan Sikma who this time last year, was racing arrive & drive karts; he finished second in the final. The Champion Fine Tuned Award, also of $500, was awarded on Saturday to ROK Mini winner Jensen Burnett for another great example of terrific race prep and effort by the team and family.

The Pfaff Junior High Performer Award on Sunday was given to Ayden Ingratta, who drove to a fantastic victory in the ROK Junior class. The Motul Smooth Move Award of $300 was given to Briggs & Stratton Masters driver Ian MacIntyre for a brilliant move on the last corner of the last lap of the race, going from third to first in one move!
